Acupuncture Support for Egg Retrieval and IVF

IVF can be an exciting but physically and emotionally demanding process. From hormone injections and frequent monitoring to egg retrieval and recovery, each stage of treatment can bring its own challenges.
Acupuncture may be used as a complementary therapy alongside conventional fertility care to support relaxation, manage treatment-related discomfort, and promote overall well-being throughout an IVF cycle. Research on acupuncture and IVF has shown mixed results regarding pregnancy and live-birth outcomes; however, acupuncture may provide benefits for anxiety, relaxation, and pain management during certain stages of treatment.
At TCM FIT, an acupuncture treatment plan can be individualized according to where you are in your IVF cycle, how you are responding to ovarian stimulation, and your specific needs and goals.
How Acupuncture May Support the IVF Process
Acupuncture is commonly used as an adjunct to fertility treatment rather than as a replacement for medical care. Treatment may focus on relaxation, stress management, circulation, and comfort during different stages of the IVF process.
Research has examined the use of acupuncture around the time of oocyte retrieval. Some studies suggest that acupuncture may help reduce pain and anxiety associated with egg retrieval, although the quality of evidence varies and more research is needed.
Acupuncture may also help address the emotional demands of IVF. Fertility treatment can be stressful, and acupuncture may provide a supportive approach for relaxation and management of treatment-related anxiety.
Acupuncture Treatment Timeline for Egg Retrieval
- Pre-Cycle Preparation: 1–3 Months Before IVF
Typical frequency: Once or twice per week
Beginning acupuncture one to three months before an IVF cycle provides an opportunity to establish a consistent treatment plan before ovarian stimulation begins.
During this phase, treatment may focus on:
Supporting overall wellness and physical balance
Promoting relaxation and stress management
Supporting healthy circulation
Preparing the body for the demands of an IVF cycle
Addressing sleep, tension, digestive discomfort, or other concerns that may affect overall well-being
This phase is individualized. Some patients may benefit from several weeks of treatment, while others may begin closer to the start of their IVF cycle.
- Ovarian Stimulation Phase
Typical frequency: Once or twice per week
Once ovarian stimulation begins and hormone injections are started, acupuncture frequency may increase to twice weekly, depending on the patient’s needs and the recommendations of their fertility care team.
During ovarian stimulation, treatment may focus on:
Promoting relaxation during a physically demanding phase of treatment
Managing stress and treatment-related tension
Supporting comfort as the ovaries respond to stimulation
Helping address bloating or pelvic discomfort
Supporting overall well-being while undergoing frequent monitoring and injections
The goal is supportive care alongside the medications and monitoring prescribed by the reproductive endocrinology team.
- Right Before Egg Retrieval
Typical timing: 1–2 days before retrieval
A session one to two days before egg retrieval may be used to promote relaxation and support comfort before the procedure.
Treatment may focus on:
Relaxation and nervous-system support
Pelvic comfort
Supporting circulation
Reducing physical tension and anxiety surrounding the procedure
Important: Acupuncture timing immediately around the trigger injection and egg retrieval should be coordinated with your fertility clinic. Some acupuncture protocols avoid treatment during the period strictly between the trigger shot and the retrieval procedure. Your reproductive endocrinologist’s instructions should always take priority.
- Post-Retrieval Recovery
Typical timing: Within 48 hours after retrieval
A follow-up acupuncture session may be scheduled within approximately 48 hours after egg retrieval, depending on how you are feeling and your fertility team’s recommendations.
Treatment may focus on supporting recovery and helping manage common post-retrieval discomfort, such as:
Pelvic cramping
Abdominal or pelvic discomfort
Bloating
Muscle tension
Stress and fatigue associated with the procedure
Acupuncture should be considered complementary care during recovery and should not replace medical evaluation when symptoms are concerning or unusual.
What About Egg Quality or IVF Success?
It is important to distinguish between using acupuncture to support comfort and well-being and claiming that acupuncture can improve or guarantee IVF success.
Research on acupuncture and IVF has produced mixed results. Some studies have reported potential benefits for certain laboratory or treatment outcomes, while other research has not demonstrated a consistent improvement in pregnancy or live-birth rates.
For this reason, acupuncture is best viewed as complementary support during IVF, rather than a substitute for fertility medications, monitoring, egg retrieval, embryo transfer, or other treatments prescribed by your reproductive endocrinologist.
A Personalized Approach
There is no single acupuncture protocol that is appropriate for every IVF patient. Treatment frequency and timing may vary depending on:
Your IVF protocol
Your response to ovarian stimulation
The timing of your trigger injection and retrieval
Your medical history
Your symptoms and comfort level
Your fertility clinic's instructions
Whether you are proceeding to fresh or frozen embryo transfer
Communication between your acupuncturist and fertility care team is especially important around the trigger shot, egg retrieval, and embryo transfer.
Acupuncture as Part of Your IVF Support Team
IVF involves much more than the physical process of stimulating the ovaries and retrieving eggs. It can also involve uncertainty, stress, disrupted routines, and significant emotional demands.
A structured acupuncture plan can provide a consistent source of supportive care throughout the cycle. The focus is not on replacing your fertility treatment, but on helping you feel more comfortable, relaxed, and supported while you undergo it.
At TCM FIT, acupuncture treatments can be tailored to the different stages of your IVF journey—from pre-cycle preparation and ovarian stimulation through egg retrieval and post-retrieval recovery.
Your fertility treatment remains the foundation of your IVF care. Acupuncture can be incorporated as a complementary therapy to support your overall well-being throughout the process.
